I was recently training a new team member to become a product advocate. The new team member was the subject matter expert for the tool in their corporation before joining our team. During their first week, phrases such as “Oh, I always wondered what that was for!” and “I have been doing that wrong,” were often uttered.
Did we hire the wrong person? Did the person lie about their skills? The answer to both questions is “NO.” I remember having very similar experiences when receiving additional training for tools I know very well. The reason: I didn’t know what I didn’t know. The only way we discover what we don’t know is through training and development.
