As the casino industry emerges from one of the most difficult periods in its history, operators have a short window of time to assess the landscape. Issues arising since the emergence of COVID-19 include: changing consumer and employee behavior; online gaming, touch-free interactions, and other digital innovations; and a developing regulatory environment.

The Industry Environment

The gaming industry is changing faster now than perhaps at any other point in its history. Significant industry trends include changing customer interactions, the emergence of online gaming, and the residual impacts of the pandemic on the supply of labor and other resources. Companies are acting fast to add online offerings, often through mergers and acquisitions. This new business line for many land-based operators has different risks and characteristics. Digital interactions with customers bring new challenges and regulatory requirements around data privacy and security. And customers and employees are still interested in health and safety measures. Against this backdrop, there are four main “themes” of risks for land-based casino operators to consider.
