True tale of a vanity number: Over 20 years ago, I worked for a company in Totawa, New Jersey. The company transported body parts to operating rooms with to-the-minute updates on arrival time – they used the Nextel Push-To-Talk over Cellular technology when it was brand new on the market.
One day the latest advertising brochure was dropped on my desk. I looked it over fast and there it was: 1-866-LOGISTIc! The company didn’t own that number! I quickly walked past the CEO’s secretary and quietly walked into the CEO’s office to inform him of the typo. He called in the marketing staff and heads rolled – 100,000 advertising packets had been mailed out up and down the East Coast that morning!
The CEO yelled at me to locate the phone number and buy it.
My first question was, how much are you willing to pay for it?
