Ever since the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) of 1992 was overturned in May of 2018, the gaming industry has been focused on the prospects of sports wagering.

With every week that passes, countless articles come out highlighting the revenue potentials that sports wagering can bring to the industry with an equal number of articles that counter the revenue claim, arguing sports wagering is a low margin, volatile business that can operate at a loss. While there are truths that can be used to argue both viewpoints, I believe casino operators, regulators and lotteries are missing the point. With the U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn PASPA, the gaming industry has been given the gift of sport, which is the most unifying and bonding social institution available to drive consumer spending and consumer loyalty.
