I’ve always thought to myself, how cool it would be to be a movie star. People look up to you, you make the most money, your job is to pull an emotional response from a crowd, everyone takes you seriously, and you are loved. What a great gig! Then I saw the Chris Rock and Will Smith slap, the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard fiasco, and every drama Hollywood could throw our way paraded out for everyone to rule on.
I’ve been through a divorce – a couple of them – and I have done some spur-of-the-moment things that would look awful in the spotlight. These movie stars do what we do, and they get eviscerated by the public who loves them.
Why?
Because they are held to the highest standard – the court of public opinion – that ever shifting, crazy place that makes it impossible to be perfect. One minute it’s okay to do one thing, and the next day it’s not. A man can’t say certain things, and woman can’t say certain things, or they get put through the shredder. I won’t even touch the racial divide in this country that seems to have gotten worse over the last decade instead of better.
