When organizations change leadership, they often lose vital learnings of programs and promotions trials and failures. Failures are important, as they accentuate the learning process. So often I hear of organizations trying something they think is new, only to learn it had been done before with the same failures as the past. Learnings were never passed down from one leadership or management group to the next.
I have a whole basket full of programs that did not work or did not perform as I had expected, and a wealth of knowledge related to each. Some programs just don’t work. They don’t drive the desired outcome no matter how you change it up.
Sometimes the math models just don’t pencil. Other times, there are too many executional elements with various points of failure. Still other times, the offer is not compelling enough, nor could be compelling enough.
Failure is good. Failure allows for learning. Companies that fail fast and fail forward, often times win the biggest.
To ensure learnings get incorporated into the larger culture and get passed on to new leaders, it is imperative to have a change management system in place.
