Outsourcing software development has become a common practice for many businesses, especially those seeking to reduce costs and take advantage of specialized expertise. However, it’s no secret that outsourcing software can be a complete crapshoot – a gamble with uncertain outcomes. While there are certainly pros to outsourcing software development, there are also significant cons, and finding the right company or resource can sometimes feel like digging for gold; you simply don’t know if you’ll hit pay dirt or not.
Although the title of my article states that outsourcing is a complete crapshoot, it doesn’t have to be that way. There are ways to stop your company from crapping out.
In this article I hope to give you some guidance on outsourcing. I got my start in the software industry 24 years ago in Silicon Valley. Over the years I have seen my fair share of application disasters, and I have also been part of three different firms that outsourced applications, became award-winning organizations and resulted in an acquisition by bigger companies. Below, I have listed the pros and cons of outsourcing so it may help you make a decision in the future.
