The pace of change in Enterprise Information Technology has never been faster. As we begin this new decade, it might be informative to look back and see what happened in the past 10 years.
The last decade can be summarized as the decade in which we needed to figure out how the Internet would be a platform for our Enterprise IT in gaming and leisure. The Internet platform now includes critical cloud computing capabilities as well as a key network transport vehicle for enterprise traffic as well as traffic to and from our customers and partners. Another point was how we implemented and succeeded with new software-defined and virtualization technologies across our data center landscape. Consider that Microsoft Azure was not available until 2010 and Office365 was not released until 2011. Furthermore, it was not until 2013 that VMware released VSAN and then 2014 when Nutanix and Hyper-Converged Infrastructure became a “thing.”
The amount of change that we had to understand, assimilate, ingest, and metabolize inside our IT organizations over the past decade dwarfed the changes in the prior 30 years combined. The amount of change that we will be dealing with in this new decade will make the last decade look like a simple exercise.
