Taxes and surcharges on connectivity invoices seem substantial – because they are! The surcharges can be up to 37% of the total invoice. Is there opt-out ability for any of the fees? This article covers a small fraction of fees that can appear with a goal to shed a bit of light on what programs the surcharges support.
Inside wire maintenance – a POTS (plain old telephone service) fee is to repair a broken wall jack/the lack of service behind the jack plate – for older buildings and small offices. POTS lines are being sunset – the phase out was to end by August 2, 2022. This fee must be requested to be removed.
True Story: My mother lived in the same apartment for over 20 years and was paying for Inside Wire Maintenance. When I shut it off the cost was $2.25 per month and she never once had to call for a repair. It was money wasted ($600 in 1992). The last invoice viewed with the fee was $4.95 per month!
