This is part two of a four-part series on creating a competitive advantage. In part one of this series, I introduced the following topics: (1) sustainable competitive advantage, (2) building blocks of competitive advantage, and (3) the value chain activities – both primary and secondary – that support these building blocks.
To quickly review, I defined a sustainable competitive advantage as “the ability of a firm to develop and maintain distinctive competencies that enable it to capture a larger market share and earn higher-than-average profits.”1 These higher-than-average profits can then be used to grow the business.
