I remember my first corporate work position; I was a secretary in the Telecommunications Department of Ernst & Whinney. My desk faced four heavy wooden doors with a pane of glass to the right of each door to see into the office. I worked on a boxy, heavy Apple Macintosh computer (laptops didn’t exist back then). My metal desk also had a thick weighty black phone with a long twist cord (so I could stay on the phone and walk to the copy or fax machine in my area).
Cleaning the computer screen consisted of using Windex, the keyboard was cleaned with Fantastic, and if the keyboard was super gross, I used a toothbrush or toothpicks to clean between the letters. Sometimes a letter would pop off, and since it was used by the previous secretary in that area, the “F” and “A” were no longer identified – those keys were blank.
