Commercial gaming market around the country continued to report expanding revenues through the second quarter of 2022. However, some international markets continued to struggle amid ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and related response. Overall, the gaming industry demonstrated strong demand, pushing beyond pre-pandemic levels in many domestic markets.
On a national level, gaming revenues in the second quarter of 2022 totaled $14.9 billion, according to the American Gaming Association. The revenue recorded in the latest period marked a new high, besting the fourth quarter of 2021. The latest performance marked a 3.8 percent improvement from the prior period and a 9.1 percent gain from one year ago. For a comparison to pre-pandemic volumes, gaming revenue was up 37.5 percent from the second quarter of 2019. Further, 2022 looks poised to outperform the recordsetting pace posted in 2021. Through the first half of 2022, revenues totaled $29.2 billion, up 18.0 percent from the same time period last year. On a state-by-state basis, 22 of the 31 states with legalized commercial gaming observed year-over-year increases in the latest quarter. Additionally, nine of those states posted their highest quarterly gaming revenues of all time.
