“Found money” is exactly what you might find waiting for you if you got a notice saying you could be part of class action lawsuit. I recently became aware of two major such lawsuits that are worth paying attention to for companies in the hospitality industry. Both are quite large and may be worth double-checking with your legal or finance teams to see if you got a notice about either one.
The first one involves Visa and Mastercard interchange fees. The Class Action Settlement notice authorized by the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of New York, states that the court has preliminarily approved a proposed settlement of as much as 6.24 billion and not less than 5.54 billion.
This lawsuit called, in re Payment of Card Interchange Fee and Merchant Discount Antitrust Litigation, is about claims that merchants paid excessive fees to accept Visa and Mastercard cards because Visa and Mastercard, individually and together with their respective member banks, violated the antirust laws.
