With the recent appointment pf Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. to the department of health and human services it seemed an exciting time to talk about the state of the industry. I will first start with a recap of the current state of the industry and then an overview of the predicted transition away from pharma and toward holistic solutions that I think you may find interesting.
Current State U.S. Health Industry
The scale of pharmaceutical dependence in America is staggering. Whilst Americans represent only 5% of the world’s population, they consume over 70% of the world’s prescription medications.
On average, Americans fill 12 prescriptions per person annually, with nearly 60% of U.S. adults taking at least one prescription drug, and 25% taking four or more regularly.
The average senior citizen takes five prescription drugs daily. Yet despite spending more than $1,200 per person each year on pharmaceuticals – nearly double what other wealthy nations spend – Americans are experiencing worse health outcomes than ever before.
The U.S. ranks lowest among developed nations in life expectancy whilst having the highest rates of chronic disease, making it painfully clear that this massive consumption of pharmaceuticals is not creating better health – it is perpetuating a cycle of dependence and disease management.
Finding a safe natural solution to work with your body’s own healing power can be a much more effective long-term option. It does require a new way of thinking about our approach to health care and some patience as results can take longer to show up versus conventional medicine. The best advice I have heard is if it is acute go medical, if not go natural.
