As we enter the second half of 2020, one thing has become clear – the world is living in a new normal. Just six months ago our industry had a very bright future. 2020 was to be the year of growth, new technology, expansion of cruises, airline routes, conventions in all industries and types, focused in the largest cities around the world. But in the wake of this pandemic, our industry – the hospitality industry – has been hurt the most. And as we look to open our economy, how will health and safety combined with technology help us move forward?
According to the World of Travel and Tourism Council, the data as of writing this article estimates a global loss of 75 million jobs and $2.1 trillion in revenue with more layoffs ahead. Depending on cities, states and countries, the losses could grow as restaurants, hotels, airlines and cruise companies find a way to operate under government mandates and guidelines. The U.S. Travel Association projects a loss of 4.6 million jobs through May, all effecting our industry, with one of the hardest hit states being Nevada. The casinos have been closed since March. As of May 2020, Atlantic City saw casino related profits plummet 65% from a year ago as a result of the pandemic closures. Recently, as reported by industry news site YOGONET, AC Mayor Marty Small Sr. explained he would like to see the nine casinos reopened by the Fourth of July holiday weekend, but as of this moment no decisions have been made. The story is the same all over the country. When will we open, what will the rules be for reopening to the public and what will our experiences be like under the new normal?
